Your Feet are Something to Be Thankful For

10542815_S_feet_many_sets_toes.jpgIt’s that time of year when thoughts turn to all that we are grateful for and at Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists we want to remind our patients not to forget to include your feet on that list. Although we often take them for granted, think of all the things you wouldn’t be able to do if your feet weren’t functioning properly. Your feet are amazing structures! They contain nearly a quarter of all the bones in your body—26 per foot.

Below are some other fun and interesting facts about feet:

·      In addition to those 26 bones, your feet contain 33 joints, 107 ligaments and 19 muscles.

·      The average person walks 100,000 miles in a lifetime.

·      The sweat glands in your feet produce approximately half a pint of perspiration each day.

·      Your feet can be window into your general health. Many conditions, such as arthritis, nerve problems, circulatory issues and diabetes may show their first symptoms in the feet.

·      Your toenails grow faster in warmer weather—teenage years and pregnancy are also big growth times for toenails.

·      Women experience foot problems four times more often than men.

·      75% of Americans will experience foot disorders at one time of their life or another.

·      The average foot has increased 2 sizes since the 1970’s.

·      Your feet are their largest at the end of the day; that’s why podiatrists recommend you shop for shoes at that time.

·      The human foot has nearly 8,000 nerves—that’s more per square centimeter than any other part of your body.

So, take good care of your feet. If you notice any unusual symptoms or changes in your feet or you experience pain or other discomfort, don’t delay. Contact our Aberdeen office for an appointment by calling: 732-566-2841. Our foot and ankle surgeons, Dr. Christopher J. Mullin and Dr. Jessica A. Addeo will examine your feet and provide a prompt diagnosis and treatment plan if necessary.
