What’s Keeping You From Getting in Shape?

In the beginning of January we at Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists see many patients who are eager to start an exercise program to get fit in the New Year. In early February, however, we begin to see patients with a variety of foot problems that are making it difficult to keep that resolution.

Below are some common exercise related foot problems and what to do about them:

Achilles Tendonitis- this large and powerful tendon that runs down the back of your leg between your calf and your ankle is most commonly injured by an overly ambitious exercise program. Achilles tendonitis commonly afflicts patients who have been inactive for a while and then do too much too soon or who work out constantly without giving muscles and tendons a chance to rest. If you start to experience any pain or swelling in this area of your leg, it’s important to take a break for a few days. You can try icing the area and taking more time to stretch before resuming your workouts.

Discomfort in the Ball of the Foot- pain in this part of your foot can be related to your toes or the joints where your toes connect to the bones in your feet. Sesamoiditis, inflammation or a Neuroma can result in pain, burning or numbness. Your shoes may not be providing adequate arch support which can also lead to problems in the ball of the foot.

Heel pain - if the plantar fascia—the long band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot—becomes inflamed due to overuse, improper footwear or as a result of pre-existing conditions like flatfeet, it can cause heel pain. In all of these scenarios, if the pain is not temporary or if it is severe from the onset, contact our Aberdeen office for an appointment at: 732-566-2841. Our podiatrists, Dr. Christopher J. Mullin, Dr. Jessica A. Addeo or Dr. Rajan Patel, will examine your feet and ankles and determine the cause of your discomfort. With the proper treatment and a sound exercise program, you’ll soon be back on the path to a more physically fit you!
