Tips for Preventing Falls

Did you know that falls are the leading cause of injury deaths of Americans ages 65 and up? One of the major reasons for falls is pain in the toes, feet or ankles. At Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care we want patients to realize that it’s important to get foot pain checked and treated promptly. There are several conditions that cause chronic pain that can lead you to alter the way you walk and increase your fall risk, including: hammertoes, bunions, plantar fasciitis, arthritis and fallen arches. In many cases there are simple solutions to these and other foot and ankle problems. Our board certified podiatrists Dr. Christopher J. Mullin, Dr. Jessica A. Addeo and Dr. Rajan Patel, will examine your feet, take a medical history and help you find the cause and solution of any foot discomfort.

Below are some other tips to help seniors avoid falls:

  1. Choose the right shoes. Avoid loose slippers, high heels, soles with no tread or a thick piece in the front of the shoe. These can call cause you to trip and fall. Make sure you have shoes that fit well and support your feet. When inside, go barefoot rather than walk around in slippery socks.
  2. Clear the area. Remove all loose area rugs. Put away small stools, plant stands, magazine racks and floor level knick knacks. Don’t have any electrical cords in walking areas.
  3. Keep moving. Exercise can help with balance, flexibility and overall muscle strength and fitness, all of which can help you move more easily and avoid falls.
  4. Make home modifications. Install no-slip grips in shower and on stair treads. Have handrails on both sides of staircases and increase lighting in dim areas of your home.
