Thrills, Chills but No Spills This Winter

Here in Monmouth County, the thermometer appears to be on a bit of rollercoaster: 50 degrees then 25 degrees, and sometimes in the same day! For our patients at Central Jersey Ankle and Foot Care Specialists, that means slippery conditions can come up unexpectedly. In order to reduce the risk of falls and missteps that can cause ankle sprains, we’d like to offer some tips to help you stay upright when the weather brings ice, sleet and snow:

Clear the Decks

Start by keeping the pathways to and from your house clear of snow and ice. Apply salt or sand to slippery spots. Be sure that the entrances to the house and garage are well lit so that you can spot areas that may have iced over since you left home.

Shoe Sense

It goes without saying that high heeled boots and spiky dress shoes are no match for winter weather. Always wear shoes or boots with a rubber sole that provides good traction to prevent slipping. For added protection, you can purchase spike-less gripper soles at a sporting goods store to put over your shoes to increase stability.

Be Prepared

If you use a cane, consider purchasing an ice-gripper cane tip with spikes on the bottom to penetrate ice and help you get stable support with each step. Carry a small bag of kitty litter in your pocket to pour out on an unexpected icy patch that you have to cross. Keep a pair of winter boots with gripping rubber bottoms in the car for unexpected changes in the weather.

Be Alert

Pay attention to where you are walking. Don’t carry too many packages so that your view is not obscured, and you have full use of your arms for balance. Be aware that snow may cover the ice and know where curbs and other changes in the pavement are. Plot your path from your car to the office, store or home you are going to before you get out. Choose the way that has been best cleared and sanded and is also well lit.

If, despite all these precautions, you do fall or twist an ankle, contact our Aberdeen office as soon as possible by calling: 732-566-2841. Our podiatrists, Dr. Christopher J. Mullin or Dr. Jessica A. Addeo will examine your feet and ankles and order x-rays and/or other imaging studies to determine what type of injury has occurred and then prescribe the best treatment for speedy healing.
