The Benefits of Orthotics

What do heel pain, toe deformities, arthritis and diabetic foot conditions have in common? They all can be helped by orthotics. Orthotics refer to any device that gets inserted into your shoe. The purpose of orthotics is usually to either protect an area of the foot that is in pain or to correct the functioning of your foot to eliminate discomfort.

Over the Counter Inserts

If increased comfort is primarily what you need, you may be able to find ready-made inserts that will fit the bill. Heel liners, insoles and foot cushions are all designed to give you some extra padding in areas that tend to get sore or where you need something inserted between the skin and the shoe to prevent an irritation caused by the material of the shoe rubbing on some part of the foot. Arch supports are also available. When making your choice of inserts, you should bring the shoes you plan to wear them in and try them on. If that is not possible, ask about the return policy so that you can bring the inserts back if they are not comfortable.

Custom Made Orthotics

These are inserts that are made specifically for your individual foot. If you are in serious pain, having difficulty walking or have diabetes, you should not attempt to fix your foot problems with store-bought inserts. At Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care one of our board certified foot doctors, Christopher J. Mullin, D.P.M., or Jessica A. Addeo, D.P.M. will ask questions about your foot pain, examine your feet and ankles and also watch you walk to determine just exactly what will be of most benefit to you. Custom orthotics are made from a cast mold or other three-dimensional image of your foot. They will be designed for the specific foot disorder you are experiencing and will fit the contours of your foot precisely.

Custom orthotics are classified in two categories:

  •  Accommodative—used to provide extra cushioning and support for conditions such as diabetic foot ulcers, bunions or corns.
  • Functional—designed to alter abnormal foot motion and thereby decrease pain. Functional orthotics are made of more rigid materials, such as graphite or plastic, and can also be used to treat sports injuries like tendonitis and shin splints

If you are experiencing pain or discomfort and wondering if orthotics might be able to help you, schedule an evaluation at our Aberdeen office at your earliest convenience.
