Resolve to Take Better Care of Your Feet

New Year’s is a time for resolutions and at Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists we think this is a great opportunity for patients to commit to improving their podiatric health. Below are some foot care basics that can keep feet healthy and prevent foot and ankle problems.

Develop a daily care regimen. Washing your feet daily with soap and water and drying them completely (especially between the toes) will go a long way toward preventing fungal infections. Apply foot powder in the morning to keep feet dry and a moisturizer at night to keep feet from flaking and cracking.

Conduct self-exams. Periodically examine your entire foot. Look for any unusual symptoms such as bumps, red patches, a misaligned toe or changes in skin or toenails, temperature or shape of your feet. Report anything concerning to our podiatrists, Dr. Christopher J. Mullin and Dr. Jessica A. Addeo so that the foot doctor can determine if there are any podiatric conditions developing that need treatment.

Makeover your shoe closet. Now is a good time to do an inventory of your shoes. Inspect for signs of wear: holes, loose stitching, stretched out backs and discard those pairs that are worn out. If you need new shoes, get your foot professionally measured. Foot size can change over time. Buy shoes made of natural materials that are soft and flexible with roomy toe boxes.

Spend less time in high heels. This style of shoe exerts a tremendous amount of pressure on the forefoot and squeezes your toes together which increases the risk for bunions, hammertoes and ingrown toenails. If you can’t let your heels go altogether, at least resolve to wear only for special occasions and no more than a few hours at a time.

Don’t ignore foot pain. Putting off seeking treatment for foot pain or discomfort can lead to chronic pain and long-term disability. If you are hurting, contact our Aberdeen office for an appointment as soon as possible by calling 732-566-2841.
