Preventing Ankle Injuries This Season

It’s no wonder that at Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists we see an increase in sprains and other ankle injuries at this time of year. The pace is hectic as patients rush to get everything done on their holiday to do lists. Add some icy sidewalks and sloppy parking lots and you’ve got the perfect recipe for an ankle injury. Below are some tips for keeping your ankles safe this winter:

Pay Attention: we know you have lots of extra things on your mind at this time of the year but while you’re worrying about finding the perfect gift for Aunt Edna and whether or not you can make it through the mall and still get back in time for the office Christmas party it’s all too easy to miss the curb or not see a patch of slush and end up tripping or falling. It’s important that you be aware of where you are walking and the conditions of the pavement. Ice can sometimes be difficult to see, especially at night.

Carry Less: of course in order to pay attention to the road conditions you have to be able to see them! An armload of packages can obstruct your view and make it impossible to see clearly where you are walking. This means you may not notice when the elevation of your walking surface is changing or anything in your pathway that may cause you to stumble.

Choose the Right Shoes: don’t run errands in high-heeled fashion boots or walk to a holiday party in your spiky heels. These types of shoes are notorious for creating instability that can threaten your ankles and should be severely limited or eliminated from your wardrobe. Add bad weather to already unstable ankles and you’re inviting disaster.

If despite your best efforts at protection you do end up rolling your ankle or having it give out on you when walking, don’t ignore symptoms of a sprain or other injury. Pain, swelling, bruising and difficulty bearing weight on the ankle are all signs that an injury has occurred. Make an appointment as soon as possible at our Aberdeen office so that one of our podiatrists, Dr. Christopher J. Mullin, Dr. Jessica A. Addeo or Dr. Rajan Patel can examine your ankle and determine the extent of the injury. Contact us by calling: 732-566-2841.
