Plan Ahead for Fun in the Sun

Plan Ahead for Fun in the Sun

With more snow and frigid temperatures in the forecast many of our patients at Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists are planning tropical getaways. If you are one of those fortunate people, we’d like to offer a few packing tips to ensure that you have fun and protect your feet.

Dress for a Speedy Getaway—choose a pair of comfortable, low- or no-heeled shoes or sneakers for travel day. Waiting in lines to check in, running between terminals to catch connecting flights and dragging luggage in uncomfortable shoes can result in starting your vacation with a blister or foot pain.

Foil Fungal Infections—remember to pack your flip flops or other slip on shoes to wear around the pool, at the spa or any place else where people will be walking barefoot. Sunscreen Savvy—be sure the sunscreen you pack protects against UVB and UVA rays, has at least 30 SPF and is water proof. Your feet are particularly sensitive to the sun at this time of the year because they have been covered for several months. Remember to apply sunscreen anytime you are going out in open shoes or sandals—not just when you’re heading to the beach.

Pack a Mini Foot Aid Kit—be prepared for minor foot injuries. Having bandages, anti-bacterial ointment and moleskin can save the day if you get a minor cut or blister. An emery board and nail clippers will take care of broken nails that can become ingrown or ragged cuticles.

If, despite your precautions, you come home from your vacation with an unwanted souvenir of a rash, red or flaky skin or nail discoloration, contact our Aberdeen office by calling: 732-566-2841. Our podiatrists, Dr. Christopher J. Mullin and Dr. Jessica A. Addeo will examine your feet and determine if an infection is present and how to treat it.
