Pack a Travel Kit for Your Feet

With summer vacation season here, you’ll be thinking about what to pack for your getaway. At Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists, we’d like to suggest a pack list for your feet. Whether you’re headed to the beach, mountains or a lakeside retreat, there are a few items that you can pack that will help protect and care for your feet when you’re away:

  • Supportive Footwear - if you think there is any possibility that you will be participating in a sport, hiking or doing any type of fitness activity, a pair of sneakers with good ankle and arch support are essential for preventing ankle sprains and other injuries.
  • Flip flops - the bacteria and fungi that cause athlete’s foot and fungal toenails are lurking by the pool, in the spa, gym and perhaps even your hotel room floor. These infections are spread by direct contact with the fungi. Flip-flops prevent that from happening.
  • Sunscreen - the skin on your feet needs protection from the sun just like on the rest of your body. Apply to tops and bottoms of feet.
  • Aloe Vera - to relieve sunburn if you are not as diligent as you should be with the sunscreen!
  • Moleskin - place on an irritated area or over a blister to prevent further damage.
  • Toenail clippers and emery board - keep toes trimmed short and straight across. Trim or file off jagged edges to prevent ingrown nails.
  • Bandages - for minor cuts and blisters.
  • Antibiotic ointment - to apply to cuts scrapes on your foot.
  • Over the counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication - in case of injury or if you overdo it and feet are achy and swollen.

If you do injure your foot while on vacation, seek medical care and be sure to make a follow-up appointment at our Aberdeen office to see one of our podiatrists, Dr. Christopher J. Mullin, Dr. Jessica A. Addeo or Dr. Rajan Patel when you return. The health of your feet is our top priority. Happy travels!
