Make-Over Your Family’s Diet

It’s National Nutrition Month and at Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care that gives us an opportunity to let patients know the important role that diet plays in podiatric health. Most significantly, maintaining a healthy weight (or losing weight if you need to) can decrease both the risk and the severity of many foot disorders, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Metatarsalgia
  • Sesamoiditis
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures

Now is the time to make healthy eating a family affair. It’s estimated that nearly 20% of children ages 6-11 in the U.S. are overweight or obese. Studies show that overweight children are likely to continue to be overweight into adulthood which significantly increases the likelihood of other health issues too like heart disease, hypertension and diabetes.

Have Fun With Food

Change doesn’t have to be hard! There are many ways to make choosing healthy foods fun and informative for your family. Don’t attempt a complete overnight makeover.
Choose from the activities below to slowly change your family’s attitude and diet.

Get Cooking- involve your children in the planning and cooking of family meals. Encourage them to pick out colorful vegetables and fruits they have never tried at the grocery store and then research recipes and ways to prepare them.

Go International- explore the foods and diets of other countries. Many ethnic diets contain different and flavorful spices that allow you to boost taste without adding calories.

Eat Local- explore places where food is grown in your area. If possible, visit farms and dairies and see first hand what type of produce grows in your region. Help your children make the connection that buying local ensures the freshest food and supports farmers.

Make Meal Time Meaningful- after taking the time to choose and cook new foods, enjoy them as a family. Turn off TV, ban electronics from the table and talk. Share news about your day, stories about your family and current events. Try fun conversation starters like, “If you had one super power what would it be?” and “If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have one food what would it be?”

Not only will making over your diet as a family improve your health, but it can also be a bonding experience. If you or a family member is currently experiencing foot or ankle pain, make an appointment at our Aberdeen office by calling: 732-566-2841. Our podiatrists, Dr. Christopher J. Mullin, Dr. Jessica A. Addeo or Dr. Rajan Patel will diagnose your foot problem and help you learn whether eating habits and other lifestyle factors may be affecting it.
