Help Someone You Love Stop Smoking

You may be wondering why we at Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists, would be posting information about quitting cigarettes, but smoking can be very detrimental to the health of your feet. The chemicals in cigarette smoke cause your blood vessels to narrow thereby decreasing circulation. For your feet this can mean increased risk associated with several medical conditions such as diabetes and peripheral artery disease as well as much longer healing times from podiatric injuries and surgeries. If you have a family member that smokes, suggest that they talk to our podiatrists, Dr. Christopher J. Mullin, Dr. Jessica A. Addeo or Dr. Rajan Patel, about the negative impact smoking can have on podiatric health.

November 16th is the Great American Smokeout. In honor of this event we’d like to offer some ways that you can be supportive if someone you love is trying to quit:

Be Direct: let the person you wish to help know that you are there for him or her and that you are willing to be called upon in whatever way will best help. Find out if they’d like you to ask them regularly about how they’re doing or what they think would be most helpful.

See the Big Picture: it can be useful for the person who is trying to quit smoking to articulate the reasons why they want to quit: prevent cancer, live a longer life, have more energy to play with children, improve their appearance, etc. Discuss with your loved one what their reasons are for stopping. Write them down and have it as a reference for them to re-read when they are tempted to give up.

Offer Physical Support: you can help a person get past a craving or “nicotine fit” by offering a distracting activity like a bike ride, movie or walk. Buy hard candy, carrot sticks or other fresh veggies, and other things that can be oral substitutes.

Remove triggers: wash all clothes and household items that smell like smoke. Get rid of ash trays, lighters and anything else associated with smoking. Ask your loved one to identify times and situations where they smoke and try to change those routines or provide replacement activities.

If you have questions about smoking and your feet, don’t hesitate to contact our Aberdeen office by calling: 732-566-2841.
