Healthy Heart Tips Help Feet Too

At Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists, we believe in a whole-body approach to podiatric health. Although good foot care and supportive shoes can go a long way toward protecting your feet, the lifestyle choices you make also have a great impact on the health of your feet. This is also true when it comes to the health of your heart. You can help lower your risk of heart attack and stroke and other conditions often associated with heart disease such as hypertension and diabetes. In recognition of American Heart Month, we are offering some ways to improve heart (and foot) health.

Quit Smoking—did you know that after just one year of quitting you’ll reduce your risk of heart disease by 50 percent? In addition, smoking impedes your circulation which raises your risk for foot and other lower extremity complications and slows healing.

Get Physical—regular exercise can significantly decrease your chances of heart trouble. It also helps you keep your weight at an appropriate level and maintain range of motion and flexibility in your feet. You don’t have to join a sports team or train for a marathon. Just walking can go a long way towards increasing your level of fitness. Swap more active pursuits like dancing or skating for the usual “happy hour” or coffee get together. Try to add more steps to each day by doing things like pacing while you talk on the phone or doing leg lifts at the sink while washing the dishes. Whatever activity you choose, make sure you wear footwear designed for what you’re doing. If you experience foot or ankle pain with increased activity, contact our Aberdeen office. Watch What You Eat—your diet plays a significant role in your heart and overall health. If you are overweight, talk to your doctor about a safe plan to lose excess pounds. Look for ways to improve your nutrition quotient. Swap out sugary drinks with water flavored with fruits or cucumber and mint. Decrease portion sizes. Replace high fat and calorie snacks with savory salsas and baked chips, hummus and vegetables, frozen fruit bars.
