Non-Surgical Relief for Haglund’s Deformity

Have you ever heard of “pump bump?” While it may sound like a new dance craze, it’s actually another name for a condition known as Haglund’s Deformity. This condition is characterized by a bony enlargement at the back of the heel. It’s an inflammation caused by irritation to the soft tissue around the Achilles tendon. Since irritation at this spot is often caused by the rigid backs of pump style shoes and women who wear pumps frequently have a higher prevalence of Haglund’s Deformity, its nickname is “pump bump.”  Haglund’s Deformity can also be hereditary. Certain inherited foot structures such as, high arches, a tight Achilles tendon, and the tendency to walk on the outside of the heel can make you more prone to developing Haglund’s Deformity. Other symptoms of this problem are pain in the back of the heel and swelling in the same area often accompanied by redness.

Treatment Options

At Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care, our board certified foot surgeons Dr. Christopher J. Mullin and Dr. Jessica A. Addeo will work with you to find the best treatment option depending on the severity of your condition and your lifestyle. Some possible treatments for Haglund’s Deformity include:

  • Anti-inflammatory medication to reduce pain and swelling
  • Icing, which can also help reduce swelling and inflammation
  • A stretching regimen
  • Heel lifts, pads, or other orthotic devices or shoe modifications
  • Physical therapy
  • Immobilization

Of course surgery is an option if your Haglund’s Deformity doesn’t seem to be improved by any of the above treatments.  The best way to find out how to relieve the pain and discomfort from “pump bump” is to schedule an appointment at our Aberdeen office with one of our podiatrists for a thorough exam and to discuss treatment options.
