Foot Problems for Athletes

Fall sports are in full swing in Monmouth County and at Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists we’re seeing an upswing in sports related foot health issues. Taking good care of your feet and ankles is every bit as important as any conditioning or practice for your sport. Minimize the risk of injury or podiatric medical issues by always wearing properly fitting footwear designed for your specific sport and stretching before and after exercise.

Below are some of the more common sports-related conditions to lookout for:

  • Ankle Sprains—one of the most common injuries and often one of the most ignored. Ankle sprains require prompt medical attention. Sometimes what feels like a sprain is actually a fracture. Sprains that are not treated correctly will result in weakened ligaments and can lead to chronic ankle instability and increased risk for future injuries.
  • Achilles Tendonitis—a painful inflammation of the large tendon that stretches from the calf to the heel, often caused by a sudden increase in activity. Left untreated, it can lead to an increased chance of an Achilles rupture.
  • Arch Strain—pain and burning under the arch of the foot
  • Morton’s Neuroma—thickening of the nerves in the ball of the foot, often the result of repetitive pounding from court sports, running, basketball, etc., that compresses and irritates the nerve
  • Plantar Fasciitis—Extreme heel pain that is caused by the inflammation of the ligament at the base of the foot. Can also lead to heel spurs. Sometimes, however, heel pain can have other causes, such as a stress fracture.
  • Turf Toe—is an injury to the soft tissue structures that support the big toe. It most often occurs during a pushing off action or when the toe “jams,” coming to a stop when the foot is still moving forward.
  • Fracture of the Fifth Metatarsal—this is the long bone on the outside of your foot that connects to your little toe that can break when there is a severe ankle roll injury or over time by repeated activity, which can cause a stress fracture.

The biggest mistake athletes make is putting off seeking medical treatment for foot injuries and conditions. Our board certified foot and ankle surgeons, Dr. Christopher J. Mullin and Dr. Jessica A. Addeo will conduct a thorough exam of your feet and ankles and develop the right treatment plan for you. We offer early morning, evening, and Saturday appointments at our Aberdeen office. If you are in pain, don’t delay. Contact us and schedule a consultation today.
