Fighting Arthritis: You Can Do It!

With 33 joints in each foot, we at Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Careunderstand the disabling affect of joint disease in our patients. When your ankle, toe and feet joints hurt or are stiff and difficult to move, it can greatly impact what you are able to do, even more so sometimes than joints in other parts of your body. In honor of National Arthritis Awareness Month, we want to offer some ways that you can reduce symptoms and improve overall joint health.

Partner With Your Podiatrist

Arthritiscan take many forms but regardless of the type that you have, it’s important that you work with all your physicians, including our foot and ankle surgeons, Dr. Christopher J. Mullin, Dr. Jessica A. Addeoand Dr. Rajan Patelto formulate and execute a treatment plan. Stay current with your follow up visits and be diligent about doing what the doctors tell you. If you run into a problem with your treatment or if new symptoms develop, contactour Aberdeen office by calling: 732-566-2841. The podiatrist can help deal with bunions, hammertoes and other joint deformities that can be aggravated by arthritis. They may also be able to fit you for orthotic inserts for your shoes that will shift pressure away from painful areas or correct biomechanical issues that are creating more strain on your joints.

Keep Moving

If you have osteoarthritis, the most common kind which is also known as “wear and tear” arthritis, exercise is considered the top, non-drug treatment for improving range of motion and relieving pain. Your best bet is to incorporate several forms of exercise into your routine. Walking is a simple and beneficial way to exercise because it is weight bearing, free and low impact. Aquatic exercise offers a no-impact workout. Stretching and strengthening activities will also be helpful.

Enjoy a Diet that Promotes Joint Health

What you eat can make a big difference in your joint symptoms. An overall healthy eating plan that is high in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains will keep your weight where it should be. Excess pounds put excess pressure on joints and increase pain. In addition, there are foods that are known to fight inflammation such as fish high in omega-3 fatty acids (salmon, mackerel and tuna), berries, olive oil, nuts and vegetables high in carotenoids (peppers, carrots) are good choices. Avoid fried foods, processed foods containing large amounts of trans and saturated fats and those high in added sugars—all of these have been shown to increase inflammation in the body.
