Fight Childhood Obesity: Make a Fresh Start on Food Choices
 

September is back to school time and an opportunity to get on track with new routines. It’s also National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month and we at Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists want to share information about this troubling trend in our country. Approximately 1 in 6 children in the U.S. are obese—that’s about 17% of all youngsters. 

Our podiatrists, Dr. Christopher J. Mullin or Dr. Jessica A. Addeo educate patients about how being overweight directly impacts the health of the feet. It’s simple—the more weight your feet have to carry, the more strain is placed on them. Many conditions such as plantar fasciitis, flat feet, sesamoiditis and others can be caused or made worse by carrying excess pounds. But that’s only part of the way obesity affects foot (and total body) health. 

Children who are obese have the following issues as well:

  • Obese children have a higher risk for debilitating diseases such as asthma, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and joint problems. Many of these conditions also have a negative impact on your feet.
  • Children who are overweight tend to be less active because it is more difficult to move. This can create a catch 22: exercise which would help control weight is avoided because it’s too difficult which makes weight gain more likely.
  • Children with obesity have a higher incidence of being teased and bullied than normal weight children. This can have damaging mental health consequences such as loss of self-esteem and depression.
  • Obese children have a higher risk of becoming obese adults. That’s why it’s important to make changes now to develop healthy eating habits.

 

Small Changes—Big Results

Start slowly, involve your children and make dietary changes fun. Below are some suggestions:

  • Get rid of sugary drinks. Let each child pick out a cool water bottle and encourage them to fill it multiple times during the day to replace sports drinks, fruit juices and soda.
  • Replace unhealthy snacks with healthy ones. Like crunch? Choose multi-grain chips with salsa instead of potato chips and sour cream dip. Try low-fat frozen yogurt instead of ice cream.
  • Build a better plate. Teach your children about healthy food choices and encourage them to fill their plate with healthy foods in appropriate portions. Go to www.choosemyplate.gov for suggestions.
  • Keep a bowl of fruit out for children to snack on whenever they wish. Let them pick out new fruits at the grocery store to try.
