Eat Your Way to a Healthier Heart
Aberdeen Podiatrist | Aberdeen Eat Your Way to a Healthier Heart | NJ | Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists |

It’s February: American Heart Month. Each year the American Heart Association sponsors a month of raising awareness on keeping this most important part of us healthy. At Central Jersey Foot & Ankle Care Specialists, we know how difficult it is to stay active and maintain good circulation—two things that are very important for your feet—if your heart is failing. To help keep our patients on track, we would like to offer some information on eating to protect your heart. (P.S. Many of the same strategies and nutrition suggestions benefit your feet too!)

Forget fancy juicers and high protein food powders—you can start eating healthier right now with just a few simple tips. And, it’s not about dieting or depriving yourself of the foods you love. Here’s how:

  • Eat meals as a family instead of everyone grabbing food on the run. This will give you a chance to consciously make healthy, nutritious choices and, bonus: it’s a stress reliever to sit together and share time with each other too.
  • Check your portion sizes. In general, many of us eat more than we need and more than is recommended. Find out what a serving size is of a particular food and weigh or measure it once or twice to get a visual of what it should be. Some people find using a smaller plate can help. Don’t go back for seconds. Many times you’ll find that you’re just as satisfied with a smaller amount of delicious tasting food.
  •  Increase your culinary talents. When you cook your own food you control the amount of fats, sodium and sugar used in the preparation. Experiment with different spices and herbs to add flavor without calories. Eating out is enjoyable but try to gradually change the balance to having more meals prepared at home than out. When in a restaurant, consider portion control. Many times there’s plenty to pack for lunch the next day.
  • Don’t leave out any food groups. The best diet is one that contains a wide variety of foods (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein) to meet all your nutritional needs.

Our podiatrists, Dr. Christopher J. Mullins, Dr. Jessica A. Addeo or Dr. Rajan Patel encourage all our patients to take a total body approach to health. Keep your heart healthy and your feet will thank you. If you have questions about foot health, contact our Aberdeen office at: 732-566-2841.
