Don’t Let Foot Problems Ruin Your Summer Vacation
Aberdeen Podiatrist | Aberdeen Don’t Let Foot Problems Ruin Your Summer Vacation | NJ | Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists |

Your summer vacation is something you look forward to all year long. It’s a time to rest and recharge your batteries. Unless, that is, your plans get derailed by foot pain or injury. At Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care we want to offer some simple tips to keep your feet healthy while you travel.

Plan Your Footwear Wardrobe—pack the right shoes for all the activities you may encounter on your vacation. Many a sprained ankle have occurred to people who try to play softball in flips flops or hike in lightweight canvas sneakers. Comfortable walking shoes with good arch and ankle support will allow you sightsee for hours and not leave your feet too sore to go out to dinner. Remember to wear comfortable shoes for your travel days as well—running to get to your next plane gate or getting in and out of the car at rest stops can all take a toll on your feet if you’re not wearing the right shoes.

Avoid Cuts and Puncture Wounds—beaches, lake bottoms and backyards can all conceal glass, jagged shells, bottle caps and sharp rocks. Keeping your feet covered is your best protection against cuts and puncture wounds. If you do get an injury that breaks the skin, avoid swimming until you can treat and cover the cut to prevent infection.

Don’t Feel the Burn—it’s surprising how many people put sunscreen everywhere on their body except their feet! The skin on your feet burns just as easily as on other parts of your body. If you are spending the day lying out by the pool or on a beach blanket, apply sunscreen to the bottoms of your feet as well. Burned feet means time out from the vacation activities you want to enjoy.

Foil Fungal Infections--someone with athlete’s foot walks barefoot into the pool restroom or changing area, you go in next and guess what? Chances are you’ll be bringing home an unwanted souvenir from your vacation. Always wear flip flops or shower shoes anywhere that’s damp and where others are likely to be barefoot.

If you find you are experiencing foot or ankle pain after your trip or have any other unusual symptoms, contact our Aberdeen office by calling: 732-566-2841. It’s important to have one of our podiatrists, Dr. Christopher J. Mullin, Dr. Jessica A. Addeo or Dr. Rajan Patel, examine your feet and diagnose any new foot conditions promptly before they become more serious.
