Don’t “Fall” Prey to These Myths

In September at Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists our thoughts turn to fall and falls. That’s because it’s the month we recognize National Falls Prevention Awareness Day. If you’re a person over the age of 65 you have an increased risk for falling. Many people in this age group think, “it won’t happen to me,” but that’s just one of many myths that may actually increase your risk. The reality is that 1 in 4 older Americans fall each year. Below are some common myths that need to be debunked about fall risks:

MYTH: The only part of my body that causes a fall are my feet.

FACT: Foot pain—especially the kind that goes undiagnosed and untreated—is most definitely a factor in falls. For that reason, you should never put off making an appointment at our Aberdeen office if you are experiencing unusual foot or ankle symptoms. However, there are other medical concerns that can increase your risk of falls. Getting your vision checked every year is critical. Many times vision can decrease imperceptibly and can lead to a fall. Your medications can also cause you to fall if the dosage is off or interaction with other medications makes you feel light-headed or dizzy. It’s important to review your medications with your physician or pharmacist and stay current with all health appointments and conditions.

MYTH: If I stay home, I’ll limit the chances for a fall.

FACT: Actually, over half of all falls take place at home. Making some modifications to your home, however, can reduce fall hazards. These might include: adding no-slip adhesives to the bottom of the tub and shower, installing a handrail on both sides of stairs, clearing floor clutter and making sure there is ample light in all areas of the house.

MYTH: I’ll be at less risking of falling if I have fewer activities.

FACT: Just the opposite! Exercise and being active is one of the best ways to prevent falls. Look for an activity that increases balance. Even if you have not been active for a while, you can still regain some muscle strength and flexibility through a doctor-approved fitness plan.

MYTH: Falling is just something that happens when you get older.

FACT: Not true. As you can see there are many steps you can take to help prevent falls. Being proactive about reducing your fall risk can lead to a long, healthy and active life.
