Dealing with Swollen Feet and Ankles
Aberdeen Podiatrist | Aberdeen Dealing with Swollen Feet and Ankles | NJ | Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists |

Swelling in your feet and ankles may not seem like a major problem, but at Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care we know it can be a sign of a serious medical threat. Edema—as it’s known in medical terms—can also be a temporary and harmless (although still uncomfortable) condition you can treat with some simple lifestyle changes. That’s why the first step is meeting with one of our podiatrists, Dr. Christopher J. Mullin, Dr. Jessica A. Addeo or Dr. Rajan Patel to determine the cause.

Why Are my Feet Swelling?

Edema in the feet and ankles can have many and varied causes:

  • Pregnancy
  • Old age
  • Medical treatments and some medications such as oral contraceptives and certain anti-depressants and blood pressure medications
  • Allergy
  •  Insect bite
  • Malnutrition
  •  Injury
  • Kidney disorders
  • Liver failure
  • Heart failure

Obviously, the treatment for your edema will be determined in part by the cause. The foot doctor will want to get a complete medical history and also ask questions about your activities and lifestyle. Some steps you can take to reduce swelling include:

  • Don’t sit or stand in one position for long periods of time
  • Drink plenty of water to help remove extra fluid from the body
  • Limit salt intake
  • Don’t wear restrictive socks or leg wear
  • Exercise regularly
  • Elevate your feet above the level of your heart when possible

As with most foot and ankle conditions, prompt treatment is the best course of action. If swelling is not from a natural condition or is becoming a chronic issue, make an appointment to at our Aberdeen office at your earliest convenience.
