Celebrating Older Americans Month

Aberdeen Podiatrist | Aberdeen Celebrating Older Americans Month | NJ | Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists |

June is Older Americans Month and we at Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists would like to take this opportunity to highlight some important foot health care information for senior patients. It’s only natural that as we age some health issues are going to develop, but there is much that can be done to keep feet healthy and ensure an active lifestyle for many years to come. Here are some suggestions:

  • Inspect feet daily—your feet can act as an “early warning system” for the rest of your body. Oftentimes foot problems are indicators of systemic health issues such as arthritis, diabetes, nerve and circulatory problems. That’s why it’s important to get in the habit of checking your feet so you can easily spot changes in color, temperature, shape or size. Look for red marks, bumps, blisters and anything that seems not quite right. If you are unable to see your entire foot, ask a family member to help.
  • Keep the blood flowing—good circulation is essential for healthy feet. Regular exercise, not sitting for long periods of time or with your legs crossed and not smoking are all ways to improve circulation.
  • Get a Good Fit—one of the best ways of preventing foot problems is wearing shoes that fit properly and are well made. Shoes should have good arch support and not rub or pinch anywhere. Be sure you have plenty of room for your toes and keep heel height to 2 inches or less.
  • Keep feet dry—bacteria and fungi that cause athlete’s foot and fungal nails love damp, dark conditions. Change your socks as soon as you notice they are damp and use a foot powder.
  • Check it out--if you have foot pain, don’t put off making an appointment  at our Aberdeen office. Our podiatrists, Dr. Christopher J. Mullin, Dr. Jessica A. Addeo or Dr. Rajan Patel will find the cause of your discomfort and prescribe the appropriate treatment. Patients who put off seeking treatment may experience a fall because trying to compensate for the pain alters their gait and causes balance issues. Call us today at 732-566-2841.
