Celebrate National “I Love My Feet” Day

Aberdeen Podiatrist | Aberdeen Celebrate National “I Love My Feet” Day | NJ | Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists |

Thursday, August 17th was the National “I Love My Feet” Day. At Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care we are very happy to recognize this special day with a reminder of ways to take good care of your feet:

  • Buy good quality shoes that fit. Did you know that 90% of women are wearing shoes that are too small for them? Your shoes are your first line of defense against chronic foot problems and injuries. Do your feet a favor and get them professionally measured before buying your next pair of shoes. Choose a style that has good arch and ankle support and also that is made of natural, flexible materials that allow your feet to breathe. Before purchasing, try on both shoes and walk around for a good period of time in the store to make sure they don’t rub or pinch anywhere.
  • Get a pedicure—but safely! Not all nail salons are run equally. Before you get a pedicure, check out your salon. Salons are usually licensed by their state to show that they adhere to certain health standards. The certificate should be prominently displayed. Observe first and make sure pedicure tools and foot baths are properly sanitized. Nail technicians should also wash their hands between clients. Finally, if the salon does not look clean, move on to someplace else.
  • Use sunscreen on your feet when you are at the beach, pool, or spending a day outside with open sandals. A bad sunburn can definitely keep you off your feet for a few days but even more importantly, it greatly increases your risk of melanoma and other forms of skin cancer.
  • Don’t smoke. Smoking impedes the ability of your circulatory system to function properly and that means reduced blood flow to your feet. This slows down your recovery from injuries and can lead to other problems too. The rest of your body will thank you as well!
  • Adopt good foot care habits. Develop a daily regimen of caring for your feet that includes washing and drying them completely. Apply an emollient moisturizer or a foot powder (depending on whether your feet tend to be dry or perspire excessively).
  • Don’t ignore foot pain. When your feet hurt, contact our Aberdeen office. Our podiatrists, Dr. Christopher J. Mullin, Dr. Jessica A. Addeo and Dr. Rajan Patel will examine your feet, determine the cause of the discomfort and get you back to your active lifestyle as quickly as possible.
