Anatomy of a Good Running Shoe

With the first hints of spring weather, many of our patients at Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialistsare looking forward to running outdoors. The most important equipment for this fitness activity is a good pair of running shoes that fit properly. Before hitting the track, we suggest that you inspect your running shoes for signs of wear. The American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine suggests replacing running shoes when they show obvious signs of wear. This could be every 300-500 miles or every year, whichever comes first.

The following are the components of a good shoe:

Flexibility- this is an important feature but only in the area where the ball of your foot rests so that when you land with each step, the shoe is flexible enough to not inhibit the natural folding of your forefoot. If, however, you can bend your shoe completely in half or twist it into a spiral, it is too flexible for running and will not hold your foot securely in place.

Cushioning- the cushioning in a running shoe acts as a shock absorber. This is particularly important in the heel and midsole area of the shoe. Midsole cushioning reduces the strain put on your heels and ankles. Additional padding in a running shoe is partly a matter of preference. Some runners prefer the lightest weight possible for their shoes and will then trade off some level of cushioning to have a lighter shoe.

Arch Support- this is particularly critical if you have flat feet. Flat feet greatly increase the risk for plantar fasciitis, heel spurs and other foot conditions. The foot doctor may prescribe an orthotic device to be worn in the shoe and can make recommendations about specific styles that will be most comfortable.
