A Spring Threat to Your Feet

Aberdeen Podiatrist | Aberdeen A Spring Threat to Your Feet | NJ | Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists |

You may not see your lawn mower as a weapon but consider this: mower blades spin at 3,000 revolutions per minute and produce three times the kinetic energy of a .357 handgun.  The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission reports that over 37,000 Americans are injured due to power mower accidents every year. Injuries range from cuts and lacerations to deep wounds with torn tendons and amputations. Mower injuries carry a high risk of infection since the blades are dirty from mowing. At Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists we want to remind our patients to protect their feet during mowing season. Below are some precautions you should take:

  • Always wear heavy shoes or work boots when mowing (never sneakers or sandals!).
  • Don’t mow a wet lawn—the number one cause of mowing injuries is loss of control of the mower on grass that is wet.
  • When purchasing a new mower look for one that features a release mechanism on the handle that will automatically turn the machine off when hands let go.
  • Prevent projectile launching of lawn debris by keeping the clip bag attached.
  • If mowing on a slope, go slowly and mow across, not up and down.
  • Never let children ride on your lap while mowing the lawn.
  • Do not pull a mower backwards while it is running.
  • Make sure you know where your children are when you are mowing and be firm in telling them they are not to come on the lawn while the mower is turned on.

Prompt Treatment is a Must

If you do suffer a power mower injury be sure to seek treatment immediately. Due to the high risk of infection, even a seemingly minor cut can quickly become a major problem. Our foot and ankle surgeons, Dr. Christopher J. Mullin, Dr. Jessica A. Addeo and Dr. Rajan Patel will want to examine your foot even if you were initially treated at the emergency room to follow up on treatment and be sure you are taking all the necessary steps to recover from an injury. Make an appointment at our Aberdeen office at your earliest convenience by calling: 732-566-2841.
