7 Tips for Preventing Heart Disease
 

February is National Heart Month and at Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists our podiatrists, Dr. Christopher J. Mullin, Dr. Jessica A. Addeo and Dr. Rajan Patel want patients to be educated about this important health concern. Your feet rely on your heart for good circulation and the ability to remain active. The health of your heart affects your entire body.

Below are 7 ways you can lower your risk of heart disease:

1. Get Moving- physical activity works your heart and is helpful in maintaining a healthy weight. It also can lower your cholesterol and blood pressure and improve your mood. Strive for 30 minutes of moderate physical activity such as brisk walking five times a week. Children need 60 minutes a day. Consider making being more active a family affair with biking, hikes, ice skating or other fun activities.

2. Keep Cholesterol Under Control- cholesterol is a naturally occurring substance in the body but when you have too much of LDL cholesterol it can combine with white blood cells and cause plaque to form in your veins and arteries increasing your risk of heart disease. Cholesterol can be controlled with diet and medication.

3. Eat a Healthier Diet- the goal is to increase healthy foods like fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish and lean meats while reducing fats, sugars, refined white flour and processed snacks that are high in empty calories. Try re-designing your plate by filling half of it with veggies and then splitting the remaining half between your protein and starch.

4. Monitor Blood Pressure- keeping your blood pressure within a healthy range means less strain on your heart and arteries. Factors that help keep blood pressure down include: exercise, eating a healthy diet that’s low in sodium, reducing stress, not smoking and limiting alcohol.

5. If You’re Overweight Start Reducing- make smart changes in diet and activity level. Have carrots instead of pretzels and high protein, low fat yogurt instead of ice cream. Watch your favorite series while you walk on the treadmill instead of laying on the couch; pace while you talk on the phone instead of sitting.

6. Eat Less Sugar- elevated blood sugar levels can lead to diabetes which greatly increases your risk of heart disease and stroke.

7. Stop Smoking- smoking causes damage to your circulatory system and can lead to hardened arteries, blood clots and aneurysms. It also reduces your good cholesterol.
