5 Issues Your Shoes Can Reveal

Aberdeen Podiatrist | Aberdeen 5 Issues Your Shoes Can Reveal | NJ | Central Jersey Ankle & Foot Care Specialists |

Did you know that at Central Jersey Foot & Ankle Care Specialists our podiatrists, Dr. Christopher J. Mullins, Dr. Jessica A. Addeo and Dr. Rajan Patel can determine certain facts about your feet just by looking at your shoes? It’s true. The wear patterns of shoes reveal significant aspects of foot structure and mechanics. By examining a pair of shoes you’ve worn for a while, the foot doctor can gain important information that will be useful in diagnosing foot problems and also in finding ways to get relief from painful foot conditions. Here are some issues your shoes may give away:

  1. Bunions—if your shoe shows significant wear on the side of the big toe it can be an indication that a bunion (a bony protrusion caused by the bone at the base of the toe moving out of place) is forming or growing larger.
  2. Overly tight heel tendons—shown by wear on the bottom of the shoe by the ball of the foot.
  3. Hammertoes—the telltale sign would be toe-shaped ridges in the upper part of the shoe.
  4. Your shoes are too small—wear on the upper part of the shoe over your toes or on the sides of the toes can be signal that the shoe is too small for its owners. It’s estimated that 9 out of 10 women are wearing shoes that are too tight.
  5. Over or underpronation—wear on the outside of your sole shows that your foot tends to turn out. If there’s more wear on the inner part of the sole, it means your foot is turning inward. Either of these conditions can lead to painful and disabling foot conditions as well as problems for your back and knees.

Of course, your shoes are just one tool in diagnosing foot conditions. The podiatrist will of course conduct a complete examination of your toes, feet and ankles and also get a medical history from you when looking for the source of foot pain. X-rays or other imaging or laboratory tests may be ordered to complete the picture. Once the foot doctor diagnoses your foot disorder, recommendations about specific shoe designs or materials as well as custom orthotic devices may be suggested to reduce the risk of injury and make every day and sports activities pain free.
