3 Reasons Your New Fitness Plan Fell Flat

Okay, show of hands: how many of you are sticking with your New Year’s resolution to get in better shape this year? At Central Jersey Foot & Ankle Care Specialists we know it can be difficult to get a new exercise program off the ground and even harder if your feet are hurting you.

Below are some common reasons we hear about why people give up on a fitness plan and how to get back on track:

1. You chose the wrong activity- If you have joint issues and you are forcing yourself to run or do another high impact activity, chances are you’re in a lot of pain now. It’s important to match your choice of exercise with your body’s abilities and your personal interests. If you prefer a more social activity, try an exercise class. Have a crazy schedule? Walking can be done anywhere, anytime, in any weather. (And, by the way, swimming is a good choice if arthritis or other joint disorders are a factor.)

2. You started off too enthusiastically- Trying to go from couch potato to track star in a few weeks is a sure way to get yourself sidelined. Achilles tendonitis, shin splints and other overuse injuries are likely to occur if you start out too intensely with a strenuous routine done daily without rest periods. If you believe you have injured yourself, make an appointment at our Aberdeen office by calling: 732-566-2841. Our podiatrists, , Dr. Christopher J. Mullin, Dr. Jessica A. Addeo or Dr. Rajan Patel will determine the cause of your pain and prescribe the correct treatment. Follow the doctor’s orders and rest your foot as directed. Then start up again but take it more slowly.

3. The shoes you wore hurt your feet- From our perspective, the most important piece of equipment for any sport or exercise program is the shoes. Fitness shoes are designed for specific activities and it’s important that you get shoes that match the type of motion your foot will do for your sport. Get professionally fitted too and be sure that if you have an existing condition, such as a bunion or plantar fasciitis, that the shoes you choose do not make it worse.

The foot doctor can make recommendations regarding the type of sport or exercise and the shoes that would be best for your individual feet. If you have questions, contact us.
